First Time Solo

Uncategorized January 30th, 2006

Well, we survived our first solo day with one Mommy and two kids (and NO OTHER adults in the house!).  And there were no tears on Mom’s part, and she actually got a few things done! PLUS, I managed our first outing with the two kids. It went very well. Alex slept the entire time, and Will behaved well, even when we were waiting for 20 minutes at the pharmacy over some insurance problems.  Alex waited just until we got to the car to start screaming.  What a good boy!  Good thing the store is about a minute or two away.

The biggest question I’ve been getting is “How is Will adjusting?”  I think a story shows it best. Saturday, one of James’ partners and his 4 year old son, Jared, stopped by, dropping off something. Will saw Jared and he immediately said, “Jared! Jared! Look! That’s Baby Alex! Look! My train!” (He and James had built a HUGE arrangement with his train tracks that morning.)  I was impressed Alex rated above the trains!  Will is handling the change as best to be expected. There are issues at times, but over all, he seems to show love for “his baby”, and likes to hold him. If Alex is on the floor in the boppy pillow, Will likes to lay his head on the pillow and gently pat Alex on the head.  He also likes to swing Alex in the infant swing—just a bit rougher then Mommy wants him to though.  We shall see how it goes this week. Last week my mom was here to help out, and that was a huge blessing! It was such a help to have someone distract give Will the attention he was seeking while I was attending Alex, or to hold Alex while Will and I did things.

Alex is waking up about 2 times in the night. Those two times are long times though. He’s been having more and more problems with spitting up/throwing up and gas in the last week. I’ve tried burping him better, but the problem got worse. I’m now going Dairy free again, to see if that helps (it worked with Will, who still does not eat much diary).  We shall see. I’ve gotten my chocolate soy milk and know what rice milk I’ll be getting to cook with. This time around, it will be much easier. Now—if the problem is chocolate, not the diary, there may be a problem!

Weekend Update

Uncategorized January 24th, 2006

Saturday & Sunday featured our first “Family of Four” outings.  Saturday, James & Will spent some more “Daddy/Son” time, going to the Children’s Museum.  Then, later in the afternoon, I was saying how watching_daddy_fly_plane_small.jpgit’d been a beautiful sunny day, and I hadn’t been outside at all. So we went out and watched James fly some model planes he’d gotten for Christmas.  He’s taken Will out to do it before, but it was my first time to see it (Alex slept in the car the whole time).  We went to the near by High School’s football stadium parking lot and watched him fly them for a bit. Both only have battery times of 10 minutes, so they were short flights.  But it was still fun to watch them fly and crash.  (Picture is of Will watching daddy flying the plane.)  Then we got to go to Burger King for supper, where Will got to play on the play area.

Sunday we ventured out to church. I have to admit, I was a bit teary on the way, thinking of how different this first church experience for Alex was going to be compared to Will’s. Our church family at Hanfield was so excited to see Will, and it was such fun to “show him off” to everyone. I was thinking on our way to the new church, we might see one or two people who knew us and cared that the baby was here. God, of course, showed his sense of humor, and managed to put in our bath a number of people who were excited to see Alex. (Not as many as we’d see at Henfield, but enough to make me see my foolishness.)  Alex did well during church, and we sang what I will forever call his “Birth Song”. See, while I was in labor, I turned on the local Christian radio station that could be piped through the TV, had the lights dimmed, and was napping (while James was calling family and getting supper).  I woke up hearing the song “How Great Is Our God” by Chris Tomlin (which is getting played non-stop here right now). It was so fitting to me, how God was bringing this baby into the world right when we’d been praying about his delivery, and I ended up having a worship experience in the hospital room right there. So, to sing that song the first Sunday we’re back at church…well, needless to say, the tears were flowing again.  Boy, it’ll be nice to have the hormones back at a “normal” level!

Rough Days

Uncategorized January 20th, 2006

Wednesday was a rough day for Alex.  He got to visit the Doctor, and DID NOT appreciate being stripped down and being examined. He was very vocal about his displeasure. I was surprised to find out he’d lost over a pound at the hospital, he had checked out under 8 lbs.  He was back up to 8 by then, and since he was so “vigorous and strong”, our Dr. was not worried.  He also suffered the first pain (of probably many) inflicted by his big brother. We’re not quite sure what happened. Will wasn’t very clear, but he got in trouble because the baby who’d been laying quietly was suddenly screaming and Will was backing away, looking guilty.  We’re working on what is gentle and what is not, as well as not leaving the two of them alone in the room together!

Thursday was a rough day for me. Just a build up of lack of sleep, hormones going crazy, and pain, all together made it a day of tears for no good reason. Today the Doctor verified the episiotomy I got has in infection, so we’re treating that.  But it’s been an uncomfortable/painful few days.

And so, we’re adjusting. Alex has a very nocturnal schedule, where most of his eating has occurred then. We’re slowly trying to get him to eat more/stay awake more in the daytime, and sleep more at night, but it’s taking time. Last night he only got up 3 times…sounds good, but I’m being reminded how those times he’s awake can be long with diaper changes, feeding, etc. It’s a good thing God makes babies so cute! Makes it easier to put up with it all! And since he’s so cute, I have to put up some pictures to share!  Thank you all for your prayers as we’re adjusting, we really appreciate them.

Yes, we know it’s probably just gas, but it’s still cute!

Welcome Alexander Ryan Miles

Uncategorized January 17th, 2006

Friday, January 13th, at 10:02 pm Baby Alex joined our family!

This was a great answer to prayer! After thinking more about the situation I described on Thursday, I was nervous about doing an Amniocentesis.  The hospital never called on Thursday to schedule it for Friday, and I was starting to think how nice it would be if the baby came that weekend, and we wouldn’t have to do the procedure (let alone induce).  Since I’d been having contractions on and off more regularly since Wednesday night, I didn’t think that was too crazy of a thought. I asked several people to start praying for that—and did their prayers ever work!

Thursday night I was up for a few hours with contractions strong enough keep me awake (but not strong enough to keep me from reading).  Friday morning, Will and I went for a walk in the rain (it was still in the 50s). That, vacuuming the house, and various other cleaning tasks helped move the contractions to a point at 10:00, where I realized I probably should start timing them. Then the Doctor’s office called to set up the appointment for the Amnio.  I feel sorry for the poor receptionist, who probably didn’t really want me to start explaining why I didn’t want to do it.  She said she’d have the Doctor call me back (he was on-call at the hospital). He called me back in a few minutes, and we talked. When I mentioned I thought the contractions had been coming about 10 minutes apart, pretty regularly, he said I could come in and he’d check me. So I told him I’d be in at lunch time (I had emailed James earlier and told him to come home for lunch and not plan on going back in!).  I went in, was checked, and the Doctor told me I could go home, take care of any loose ends we had, and head over to the hospital. I asked him how far along I was, and he said 5 cm.
I went home, and we called Grandma to ask her to come down and get Will. We told her we’d meet them at the hospital. It still took over an hour to get stuff together and get over there.  As we walked down the hallway towards our Labor & Delivery Room, Will kept calling “Baby Alex!  Baby Alex!” I got the impression he thought we were there to pick him up, like we get things at the store! (Don’t I wish!)  We got settled quickly, and while James and Will took a walk, I was checked and still at 5 cm. They were going to break my water, but discovered the Staph B test I had the week before was positive. (This means I had a bacteria that is common in most people & harmless to adults, but can be bad for the baby. So they had to give me a dose of antibiotics to make sure I didn’t pass it on during the birth. They needed 2 hours for the antibiotics to get into my system, so they had to wait to break my water for two more hours.)  Will did well watching some cartoons on PBS, as well as getting to have a cookie in the waiting room. Then Grandpa and Grandma came, and after we talked awhile, they decided to take him back up to their house (instead of waiting at our house for the baby to be born, visiting, and then going up, since it looked like it was going to take awhile).  Will was very excited to ride in the van with them, and had no problems leaving.

Once the medicine had been in my system, they broke my water. There it was discovered there was meconium in the water.  This (combined with Alex’s early delivery—remember he was due Jan. 31st) made some interesting complications in his delivery. The Dr. told us after I pushed his head out, they’d ask me to stop, so they could suction out his mouth and nose. They would not stimulate him, so he wouldn’t cry (they didn’t want him swallowing the fluid). Then they’d have him go to the infant area where there would be “lots of people” to check on him. I appreciated being warned!  At that point, I was at 5-6 cm, and rather disappointed at how much I’d slowed down.  We went ahead and got the epidural.  After that, James and I watched the news, talked a bit, and then he decided to call family members and update them, while I took a nap (this is around 8).  I dozed, and woke up just before he came back, at 8:30. The epidural had been set to “lessen up” at about 8, so I could monitor contractions better, and the Doctor said they could adjust the medicine to meet my needs. When I woke up, I was feeling the contractions again, and my back was hurting.  When James came in, I asked him if he could have a nurse come in. When she came in, I thought to mention, “Oh, yea, I was actually feeling like I needed to go to the bathroom, or push or something.” (Remember, I just woke up, and hadn’t had much sleep the night before!)  She did a check, and told me I was at 9 cm. I woke up and said “YES!” Then I turned to James and said, “We just told everyone I was at 6!”  At that point, the activity picked up a great deal. The Doctor was called (who needed to change and seemed to take forever), and they started setting up for the baby to come. Around 9 I got to start pushing.  Baby’s head appeared at around 10, and he got suctioned out, just as warned. Then, the rest of him came at 10:02, and he was whisked away to be cleaned and checked. That part seemed to take forever!  The nurse kept commenting on his big cheeks, and the rolls of fat on his arms, and his long fingers.  I was getting annoyed that I couldn’t see him—but was hearing that his lungs were fine, he was letting out some nice, loud cries.  It was announced that he was 8 lbs, 11 oz and everyone was amazed that Alex was that big, so early. He also was 21 ¾ inches long.  Finally they were done with him, and I got to hold him. My first thought was how different he looked then Will (which I expected).  The longer he’s around though, the more he looks like his older brother!

Because of his size, they tested Alex’s blood sugar throughout the next day, and everything looks good.  The Pediatrician who saw him on Monday felt he looked fine, like a full term baby—no one is quite sure how we ended up with such a difference between due date & size.  Right now he sleeps a great deal, and is eating well.  He does enjoy to cluster eat at night right now, and prefers to sleep being held, instead of the bassinet (but that is pretty normal for a newborn, isn’t it?).  Everything is going well for me as well. Liver levels were half of what they were when I went in by Sunday, and Monday they were even lower.  My skin still itches a bit, but it is going down. Aside from being tired and sore, I am feeling very good.

Thank you all for your prayers! Will seems to be adjusting well to Baby Alex.  If you go to the Gallery (newly added by the proud Dad), you can see pictures my dad took from their visit with Will on Saturday, and then when they brought Will home on Monday.  The hospital provides a “Birthday Cake” to celebrate the birth of your baby with friends and family.  We spent time in the family lounge celebrating that. Will seemed to enjoy meeting Alex, and even offered to share Rusty (his FAVORITE dog) with him—but he quickly took Rusty back.  There are also pictures of us at home, with Will holding Alex.  We have never seen the look on his face that we saw then! And yet, it’s the look you tend to see on all “big kids holding the new baby”.  (We found that funny.)

Thank you again for your prayers!  Keep them up as we adjust in the next few weeks!

Mystery Kind-of Solved

Uncategorized January 12th, 2006

I went to the Dr. today, and saw the Doctor who’s been handling my case the most.  They’ve been running several tests to try to figure out what exactly is wrong with me.  The key test was a Fasting Bile Acid Test.  I had to do two different blood tests (that required fasting before them), and today went in to see the results, which are only partly back.  The initial results do say my level is high (25, in case anyone knows what that number means…I do know I overheard him sharing the results with the other Dr. I’ve been seeing and the other guy said “Well, that sure explains the itching!”).

Because of that, he’s leaning more towards saying the itching is caused by Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). It is thought to be caused by swelling and blockage of the bile drainage ducts in the liver, resulting in a back-up of liver enzymes. They build up under the skin, and cause the itching.  (It can cause serious problems for the baby, but there are still mixed results from studies, so it’s hard to tell.) I do know the situation can change suddenly, that’s why I’ve been going in on Mondays and Thursdays.  The good news is, now we know, there’s hope it can be treated before it gets bad if we decide to have more kids (the last few days, I’ve been thinking I’m not sure I can make it to the end of the month, let alone have another child knowing I may have to deal with this again!).  We discussed the medication vs. inducing the baby (we were already discussing induction before he got the results back during my visit).  We came to the conclusion, since the baby is full term now (37 weeks), let’s go ahead and induce.  He will not induce without doing an amniocentesis, to make sure the lungs are fine.  So, we’re going to do that tomorrow, and if Baby Alex doesn’t come along before that, we’ll be inducing Wednesday (the next time he’s on call at the hospital). SO…at least I know the end is in sight, and soon!

It’s supposed to get up to 58 today (who-hoo!). After Will wakes up from his nap, we’re going to go walk and soak in the sunshine (and maybe that’ll help break down some of the bile, as well as move the baby).   Sadly, Will is fighting his nap, and I’m looking at all the time he’s wasting we could be doing fun stuff outside! But, he’s overtired, and needs this nap, so I’m not willing to let him skip it at this point in the afternoon.

More Medical Updates

Uncategorized January 9th, 2006

I am getting to go to my Doctors office two times a week for Non Stress Tests, plus today, I got another UltraSound.  Baby Boy is now 7 lb. 4 oz.–that weight gain over the weekend surprised me, and is making me a bit concerned (remember THREE MORE WEEKS! Lots of time to grow still!), but the head size is looking normal still! (I asked them to check). There is another women in the practice that has the same issue (and she’s a nurse, so that has seemed to add credibility to what we’re going through!), and she was telling the UltraSound Tech. about a website that helps explain what I probably have best, and it makes me understand more why the Doctors are more extreem in their response with the possibility of it this time, then last.

In other updates, Will and I made it to the store today and we got some essentials for the baby (like diapers…figured that would be a good thing to have around!).  We’re starting to feel more ready for him to join us.

Medical Update

Uncategorized January 7th, 2006

I had another blood test Friday morning to test for my Liver Bile Acid levels. Then I had an ultrasound to make sure the baby is ok. He is doing fine. He was sleeping (and later indicated to me with some sharp kicks it seemed he DID NOT approve of being woken up that way), so they were able to get good measurements. He is right on track, over 6 pounds and in the 61%. The Dr. was very happy with the size (I was thinking “Don’t they gain ½ a pound a week at this point? I still have FOUR weeks!!! That’s not good!”).  Because the high liver levels can cause the baby stress at anytime, they want me to come in two times a week for a Non Stress Test, to make sure everything is ok.  But, not much hope for the stopping of the itching. (I don’t mean to sound self-centered there! I think since I went through this with Will, and he was fine, I never thought it would hurt the baby—I just wanted to stop the discomfort for me!) I go in on Monday where we’ll talk about the tests & see if they can figure out the cause, but at this point they are more focused on watching the baby, and glad they’ve ruled out any major problems for me.

The newest “estimated due date” based on size is January 25. I’m still holding to the prediction I’ve been making since I found out I was due during the Football Playoffs—I’m thinking this is the year for the Colts to make it to the Super Bowl, and I’ll go during it.  I wouldn’t mind if he came early, though! I’m ready to be done!
