I Love You Mommy

The Boys, Tina's Blog May 13th, 2008

Today was a LONG day. By the evening, as we were getting ready to go out, we had this conversation.

Will: I love you, Mommy.
Me: I love you too… (and after he walked out to the car, I said quietly) I'm just really tired of you right now.
James: Your Mom never go tired of you, did she?
Me: She probably did.
James: My mom never got tired of me. She loved me so much she kept me next to her side all day long!

Done!

Tina's Blog May 13th, 2008

I am done with teaching my first college course! Well, except for all the grading, of course. I did make a good dent in the grading last night during the final so now it doesn't seem so overwhelming.  It was an interesting time, I'm glad I did it, but REALLY glad to be done!

The boys are going to miss seeing Grandpa & Grandma every Monday though!

Overheard (Again)

The Boys May 11th, 2008

This morning I over heard James and Will talking while I was getting ready for church.

Will: Daddy, Why do we have belly buttons?
James: Weeelllll (and a long pause)
James: When you are in Mommy's belly, you have a tube. And when you come out, the Dr. blows into the tube to blow you up. And your belly button is where he ties a knot in it so you don't go "Pbbbtttttt" around the room and go flat!

I yelled out "NO!" at that point, while Will was laughing at the "PBbbtttt" sound. I said "That's not true, Daddy's being silly."

Will said "Yeah Daddy, if the tube comes untied you turn into dust!"

Overheard

Tina's Blog May 9th, 2008

We've been working on being polite. Today I heard Will yelling "ALEX, GIVE THAT BACK PLEASE!"  Umm…not quite what I had in mind.

* * *

James: Alex, what's on your hand?
Alex: Marker!
James: Why did you color on your hand?
Alex: 'cause I said so.

Can you tell he's heard that a bit?

I Voted!

The Boys, Tina's Blog May 7th, 2008

Tuesday we got to vote in a primary that mattered! Indiana is always so late in the spring, it's been fun (mostly) to have the attention.  Ok, I am sick of the political ads, but with the DVR we skip most of the commercials anyway.  We get to vote at the fire station, so the boys were excited to go with me.  I tried to warn them we may not get to get on the fire truck (like we did last time.)  Sadly, the one fireman there didn't offer to let them "pretend to drive". Alex was QUITE upset. His pointing and crying at the ambulance got the fireman to open the back, and Alex's cries "Front! I want to go in front!" got him a chance to go in there. Will also got a chance. I didn't ask if they could go on the ladder truck (Alex's next request.)  As we left I told Will how proud I was of him for not fussing or making a big deal over it. So that is done until November. We'll have a little bit more of a talk about how we may NOT get to get on the fire truck. Or maybe I'll leave the boys at home.

Teaching Update

Tina's Blog May 7th, 2008

In case you lost track–or had no idea and was wondering–I had my last class last Monday. I'm working on the final and grading the last few presentations (thus no blog posts).  Next week is the Final!!! Who-hoo!

Monday we had our outdoor lab and it was a nice time. Because I'd only arranged for a sitter through the end of April, I took the boys with me. They had great fun seeing "my students" and joining us on the walk to the Lake. The goal of the lab was to have the classes make observations of living things and to collect some samples. Will got to see some dead fish, a snake and an earthworm.  If you ask him about it, he'll tell you about the stinky fish.  Alex enjoyed running out and was tired out by the time I took them over to Grandma's house.  Sadly, he took a longer nap, so he stayed up until I got home at 9. I think he's still catching up on his sleep (Wednesday evening).

Where I Take A BIG Step Out of My Comfort Zone

Tina's Blog May 7th, 2008

James' Mom, his Aunt & I all read a blog by a knitter called The Yarn Harlot.  She writes books about Knitting Humor. She's funny and she knits (thus the books).  I don't knit, but do enjoy her blog (I usually just skim when she goes into details over my head). She has a new book out, and a month or so ago I read she'd be coming to Indianapolis on April 29th.  I wrote to James' mom and his aunt, asking them if they'd want to come out to see her.  Since one is in Scotland and the other in CA, they chose not to. But–I was told I HAD to go and wear my sweather and my fingerless gloves.

So the big event was Tuesday night. I was quite nervous going–I felt like I had a giant N on my forehead (for NONKNITTER–or, maybe an M for Muggle as she sometimes calles nonknitters).  It seemed quite obvious when everyone else was working on their knitting while they were waiting for her to come, and I was just reading her book. But it was still an interesting and funny time. It was a cool evening, so I did wear my sweater, but had to leave the fingerless gloves off and at home. I walked in and was given a blue "ticket" for the signing, then someone turned in a purple one and they gave it to me saying "purple is much better". So I thought I"d been done fairly early. Um, I was wrong. (I knew it was going to be busy when I had to park three stores down in the shopping center the book store is at.)  So I gathered the ticket, bought the books to be signed, and then went about find a seat.

Even as a non-knitter, but reader of her blog, I got this–a sign put up on the entrance to the kids area. "Frogging" is when a kintter has to undo what she/he has done.

If you clicked on the link to her blog up above, I linked to her Indy Vist. You'll see she always takes a picture of the crowd. She said this was for her mother–Her mom always wondered if "that knitting thing would work out", and she emails her the pictures to show her.  The first picture was my section! I'm a very tiny face in the back, in front of a lady standing in a purple shirt. The second picture shows the crowd…I had NO IDEA there were so many people there. (Explains why I had to wait so long for signing the book!) So Betty, no estimates on the crowd size. Looks really big though, doesn't it? The book shelves made it hard to see the number of people and not seem crowded.

Here was my view of her taking the pictures:

Then she spoke for about an hour and a half! It was quite entertaining. I kept putting off writing this post in an attempt to recreate some of her talk here. I realized tonight there is no way I can do as good as a job, it won't be as funny to read it as to hear it and at this point (over a week later) there is no way I can remember all she said–you'll just have to read her book (Things I Learned from Knitting). Betty is getting a copy in the mail soon (I promise, I'm mailing it tomorrow!), she'll be happy to share with any family member who requests it, I'm sure. For the rest of you, you can buy it or check your local library!  But I must say, I "wrote" several verions of this post in my head as I was trying to fall asleep and they were all OUTSTANDING. Which was part of her talk. You know how your best ideas occur at night, when you're falling to sleep? That's because you're brain is using a type of waves called "theta" that is a highly creative and restorative type wave. You get it when you're waking up and falling asleep. If you can "force" your brain into those waves, you are usually happier, healither and smarter (b/c your brain can actually work on building new synapses or connections during this time). How do you force your brain into this mode? By doing repetative activities–like meditation or knitting!  Between that and her talking about how, in some ways, knitting is so easy 4 year olds can learn how to do it, I'm motivated to try to learn it again. Once I finish my spring class! (And are you surprised the science side of me only really remembers the physiology part of her talk?!?)

After she got done, they started calling up ticket colors for books to be signed. I bought some tea and a cupcake and read her book. I called James and found out I'd bought a book Betty already had so I exchanged it. The line kept moving but they kept calling other colors than purple. So I found an easy chair right up front and read and watched her sign books for people. It was quite entertaining, she is very personable and tries to talk a bit with each person. People bring her things (as you'd see on her blog if you check it out).  Finally, around 10, they called purple. There were so few left, they also called blue. So my ticket color made no difference. I chatted with two people about my age in line behind me, and before I knew it, it was my turn!

That red thing I'm holding is her traveling sock. Each tour she works on a sock and gets pictures of the sock in the various places she's been.  I told her my camera batteries were about to die and she did the picture first. I didn't think to take hold of the sock until she told me "You must hold the sock" and I said "oh yes!". She told me to get my act together! (It was in a funny way, not a mean way Mom.)  Made me laugh. She liked my sweater and I told her it was made by my Mother in Law–one of the people she was signing a book for. I also confessed I was one of those non-knitters, but between her and the family around me who did knit, I was going to take it up! Anyway, she signed both books and I left the store at 10:30.  It wasn't the worst way to spend an evening at all! I was very glad I'd done it. And maybe next time she comes I'll have a first sock to show off!

Now, it's late and I've had this in "draft" for far too long so I'm posting it with NO spell check.  Please forgive me!

Happy May Day!

Tina's Blog May 1st, 2008

Yeah! It's May! April (the month of rain) is done!  I love the month of May!

What did we do in the last week? (I was a bit embarrassed to see it has almost been a week since I posted).  Sadly, it took some real thinking to help me remember what we did! Part of the problem? Thursday I came down with the cold Alex has. This one has been a really long, annoying cold. Alex started getting sick a week ago Sunday and I'm still wiping his nose. I am still dealing with it as well. After a day I didn't feel tired, but I can't get rid of all the gunk in my sinuses/nose/throat!  I was really thankful I didn't have to talk for 3 hours Monday night, I know my voice would have NOT held up! Here's a quick review for those who might care:

  • Thursday I made 2 meals for friends who are sick + friends who have a new baby. That worked out well to do them the same day, the "old stand-by" meal I make makes enough for 2, but the family is getting a bit tired of it. They got a freezer meal I pulled out. Other than that, I rested, hoping to get better.
  • Friday we cleaned and got laundry done. We were having some friends over Sunday night and I was trying to get lots of cleaning done.
  • Saturday was another cool weekend day (we'd hit 80s the two days before! I was sad I'd been sick and not taken advantage of it, but the kids played outside on their own).  James took the boys for a bike ride in the bike trailer. They had a great time, he got sore and I got more cleaning done.
  • Looking at the weather forecast, I decided to postpone our out door lab for Monday. They were forecasting temps in the high 40s/low 50s and rain. I didn't think that'd be fun to do an outdoor lab in–and still not feeling 100%, I didn't want to be out in it.
  • Sunday was church…and then the fun of having people over.
  • While I really enjoyed our house in the company, very tidied up state, I've decided it's too much work to maintain. Any energy I gain from the clean house is sucked up with all the work trying to keep it that way!
  • Monday I picked Will up from preschool and it was warmish (50s), partly sunny/partly cloudy and not that bad out. We ate lunch at 12 outside, and I was thinking "It'd had BETTER rain this afternoon to justify my postponing lab!"  It did. By 2:30, it was a cold, miserable, windy, steady rain. Those with the 2-4 and 4-6 labs were glad for the postponement.
  • Tuesday we took Alex to the Dr. for his skin issues, and got some REALLY expensive lotion for his exima.  The same lotion we used to have that he squirted all over the bathroom counter last fall. It's stored up high so he can't get to it now.  And I stepped way out of my comfort zone that evening, but that event gets it's own post.
  • Wednesday… hmmm….the kids played outside.  I read outside and they played very nicely.  I got my two jobs done I had planned to do (sweep and mop all the floors and tidy up the kitchen).

So, there's our boring update of what's been keeping me from writing here in the last week.  I'll try to have the next two entries be a bit more entertaining. I'm working on one, my big adventure on Tuesday night. Hopefully I get it done tonight.
